It is composed of zinc oxide powder and eugenol liquid, which undergo an acid-base reaction to form a hard, biocompatible cement. This cement offers a sedative effect on the pulp, making it suitable for use in deep cavities or when pulp protection is necessary. Additionally, it has bacteriostatic properties, reducing the risk of infection. However, it is important to note that zinc oxide eugenol cement has low strength compared to other cements and may disintegrate in oral fluids over time. Therefore, it is primarily used for temporary applications or as a base under more durable restorations. Its opaque appearance can be advantageous in masking underlying tooth discoloration.
